Title         On an indigo stream...
Medium   oil on primed canvas block
Size           6x3.75cm (x7)
Year          2012

I found this mussel shell on Ballybunion Beach during winter. I was struck by it's colour blue. I prepared seven individual miniature canvases for painting by  repeatedly priming their surface until smooth to touch. The canvas solidifies with continuous priming and sanding over time. I call this surface 'canvas block'.

During daylight, I made seven individual paintings of the blue shell directly from life in my studio using an indigo tonal scale as background. In the final painting
I turn the shell, revealing another viewpoint. My series of small paintings were then framed as a unit.

This painting was exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy Exhibition 2012.
